Davis Studio Has Moved Location!

As of November 2012, Davis Studios has moved to a new home in Knoxville, Illinois. With my retirement from teaching in 2010 and after 26 rewarding years in Jacksonville, Florida, the time seemed right to explore a new location. Being closer to family and familiar regions in the Midwest were strong incentives, along with the chance to enjoy the full range of seasons. We look forward to maintaining the treasured friendships and connections in Jacksonville’s arts community, while exploring exciting new opportunities here in the heartland.

Notes & Strokes

From May 27-29, as part of this year’s Jacksonville Jazz festival, Southlight Gallery hosted “Notes & Strokes, which paired gallery artists with various musicians. This shot taken by Jacksonville artist Jamie Childers shows Larry Jon Davis doing an ink wash drawing of the ensemble Mark Williams & Bluedog. The resulting works by Southlight Gallery participants will be on display for bidding through the following week.

A Brush With Nature

From April 7-9 the Jacksonville Arboretum & Gardens (located just east of Florida 9A near the Monument Road exit) played host to “A Brush with Nature.” The 3 day event enabled an inspired group of local and regional plein air painters to record their favorite views from this marvelous 120 acre floral/arboreal treasure. This photo along the banks of Jones Creek taken by Arboretum Executive Director, Carlton Higginbotham, shows Larry Jon Davis at work on an oil painting entitled “Paradise Found.”

The splendidly organized paint-out resulted from months of planning by Arboretum members and volunteers. This coordination apparently even provided for 3 consecutive days of perfect North Florida spring weather. Participating artists benefited from over a dozen distinct eco-systems contained in this picturesque landscape resource. After the initial day’s work the group of at least 37 painters were treated to a festive artists’ dinner at the Arlington, river front residence of Melody and David Schacter. “A Brush with Nature” hospitality continued to the end of the event with Sunday evening’s Gala Reception and Sale staged at Riverplace Tower.

MOCA Features “Looking Forward/Looking Back”

Jacksonville’s Museum of Contemporary Art is hosting part of the Looking Forward/Looking Back exhibit through July 11. Here are three shots of a Davis “Earthscape” entitled Eternal Cycle Diptych. The two detail images show the mixed-media collage approach favored by the artist for many of the works in this ongoing series.
